Editing
Structural Editing
Structural editing, also called substantive or developmental editing, focuses on high-level concerns like coherence, theme, paragraph flow, and, of course, structural organization. During a structural edit, you and I will rearrange, delete, add, and rewrite content so that core ideas can be presented in the best possible way.
Stylistic Editing
A stylistic edit refines language and tone at the sentence level and makes sure they are consistent. This means adjusting language level to match the audience, choosing consistent spelling conventions (Canadian, American, British?), and ensuring language is clear and precise. It often happens alongside a structural edit, but can be done separately as well.
Copy Editing
Copy editing is the last step before a document is formatted to look like a book or website. A good copy editor will go beyond grammar, syntax, and spelling to check word usage, facts, unconscious bias, and numbering. I will also create a style sheet if one isn’t available. For projects that are being Canadianized, I ensure that the language, references, and units of measurement are updated.
Proofreading
The proofread is the final step before a project is printed, presented, or posted. It looks for design errors and small mistakes that were not caught during previous edits. Depending on the needs of your project, I will check for missing or moved content, minor language errors, incorrect image placement, and issues with the layout.
Rates
My editing rates vary depending on the type of editing, page count, subject matter, project complexity, and speed required. I follow the guidelines of Editors Canada when setting my rates. For an estimate, please contact me about your project.
Indexing
An index is an alphabetical list of key terms with locators (often page numbers) and cross-references. It is a navigation tool that helps readers quickly and painlessly find information. For many types of writing (e.g., academic papers, cookbooks, TTRPG rule books), it is close to a requirement. Following your specifications, I will create an index that is clean, compact, and easy to navigate.
Rates
My indexing rate varies depending on page count, subject matter, the speed required, and the depth (complexity) of the index. I follow the Indexing Society of Canada guidelines when setting my rates. For an estimate, please contact me about your project.
